Mission

Our mission is to establish a cutting-edge bioengineering research and technology development platform. We focus on a wide range of creative solutions in sustainable bioproduction, biomedicine, and synthetic biology through digitalizing biological Design-Build-Test-Learn cycles in our Biofoundry.

The establishment of the Institute of Bioengineering and the Estonian Centre for Bioengineering (ECB) was a milestone for the DigiBio project, which upgraded the Centre for Synthetic Biology to an autonomous research institute to build scientific excellence and promote a curiosity-driven process, leading to breakthrough scientific discoveries. Our central aim is to establish a digitized Biofoundry for streamlined, high-throughput, semi-automated genome and protein engineering and cell-free bioengineering. This will create a platform for generating and analysing big data in bioscience research, accelerating DBTL cycles for novel bioengineering solutions for biotechnology and biomedicine. Additionally, through collaboration with industry across regions, Biofoundry will consolidate the country’s bioscience capacity and ensure long-term support from national entities.

Our Teaming partner, Novo Nordisk Centre for Biosustainability in Copenhagen (DTU Biosustain), is a world leader and pioneer in digitalizing bioengineering. During the DigiBio project, they will guide us through the process of building the Biofoundry, provide training, and establish collaboration networks so that the Estonian Biofoundry becomes an integral part of the global bioscience network and contributes to the Baltic Sea region as a new biotech hub.

Our long-term mission is to utilize biotechnology to redefine humanity’s relationship with nature, focusing on scientific innovation and groundbreaking discoveries that pave the way for sustainable living.
